All About Audition
What is audition?
An audition is a short performance that you give to show your skills and suitability for a role or a job as a singer, actor, dancer, or musician. It is also a way for the people who are hiring or casting to assess your talents and see how well you fit their vision1. An audition can be either open or closed, depending on who can participate.
To prepare for an audition, you can follow some of these steps:
1. Memorize your lines, songs, or music as far in advance as you can
2. Rehearse with friends or in front of a mirror to practice your delivery and expression
3. Get into character by researching the role, the story, and the genre.
4. Be confident and showcase your personality when you walk in the door
5. Connect with your reader by making eye contact and listening to their cues
6. Confirm the details of the audition, such as the location, time, format, and expectations

What is the difference between an open and closed audition?
An open audition is one where anyone can show up and try out for the part, without needing an invitation, an appointment, or a specific qualification1. An open audition can be a good opportunity to learn from watching other actors and to network with the production staff and fellow performersA closed audition is one where only actors who have been pre-selected or invited by the production staff can audition, usually based on their résumé, reel, or agent’s recommendation1. A closed audition can be more private and focused, and allow the production staff to see how well each actor fits the role and the script
What you wear to an audition depends on the type of role and show you are auditioning for, here are some general guidelines:
1. Read the instructions you have been given by the casting director or agent, and follow them carefully
2. Read the script and think about the setting and character, and choose clothing and hairstyle that subtly allude to the role
3. Do not turn up in costume or wear anything that is too distracting or inappropriate for the audition
4. Don’t wear hats, jewellery, or logos that might interfere with your performance or the microphone
5. Feel comfortable and confident in your outfit, and make sure it is neat and well-pressed
6. Pack carefully and bring extra clothing, shoes, accessories, or props that you might need for different parts of the audition
7. Add a tinge of extra to your outfit, such as a sparkly shoe, a wristband, or a scarf, to make yourself stand out from the crowd
