Grassroots Filmmaking Shines Again: ‘Our Films Shorts Festival 6.0’ Returns This November
Lifeplus Magazine takes pride in spotlighting independent creative initiatives, and one such inspiring movement is Our Films — a community-driven platform that has been nurturing aspiring filmmakers since the early days of the pandemic.
What began in 2020 as a virtual filmmaking workshop during the Covid lockdown has grown into a full-fledged film festival that now draws entries and audiences from around the globe. Guided by a core team including filmmaker Pradipta Bhattacharjee, cinematographer Rana Pratap Karforma, editor Arunava Mitra, and media professor Arpita Bal, the initiative encouraged participants — many with no prior experience — to create short films using even basic mobile cameras.
Their online workshop sparked the formation of a WhatsApp group named Our Films, and eventually led to the launch of the Our Films Shorts Festival. The debut edition was held online and drew over 200 viewers. Encouraged by this response, the organizers continued the initiative, eventually transitioning to physical events in Kolkata and inviting film submissions from both Indian and international creators.
Now in its sixth edition, the Our Films Shorts Festival 6.0 will be held on November 22–23, 2025, at K.P. Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University, starting 10 AM onwards. The festival includes competitive sections for fiction and documentary short films, and will feature a Masterclass on Editing.
Over the years, the initiative has also hosted screenings in various districts of West Bengal, from Manbazar to Jiaganj, often organizing pop-up rooftop screenings in Kolkata — bringing cinema closer to the people.
