Dancing Across Borders: Sudeshna Dey Joins a Global Stage for Social Change

On a quiet Thursday evening this April, thousands of viewers around the world will tune in to a Zoom broadcast—not for a meeting, but for movement. Mark DeGarmo Dance’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change 2026 is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and more global than ever.

This year’s theme, Dance and Social Change, pulses through every performance. From melting ice caps to queer identity, from communication breakdowns to cultural resilience, the series is a kaleidoscope of stories told through bodies in motion.

And among the featured artists is someone close to our hearts: Sudeshna Dey, a multidisciplinary creator from West Bengal, India, and a former judge for the Lifeplus Photography Contest.

“Art is a language,” Sudeshna told us in an earlier interview. “Whether through images or movement, it’s how we connect, challenge, and transform.”

Her inclusion in this international lineup feels like a full-circle moment—not just for us, but for the many Lifeplus readers who’ve followed her journey from visual storytelling to dance.

A Stage Without Borders

The Virtual Salon Performance Series (VSPS), now in its 16th year, is no ordinary showcase. It’s a curated, transcultural, transdisciplinary platform that brings together choreographers from Cameroon, China, Colombia, India, Peru, and the United States, among others.

Each of the three broadcasts—on February 5, March 5, and April 2—features four artists and one alternate, all presenting works-in-progress that grapple with social issues.

“We’re not just watching dance,” says Mark DeGarmo, founder of MDD. “We’re witnessing change in motion.”

The lineup includes:

  • Carolyn Pampalone Rabbers (Michigan) with THAW, a visceral piece on climate change performed against an LED wall.
  • Alexis Restrepo (Colombia) blending folkloric and queer movement in Mi Vida es un Torbellino.
  • Yan Longdan (China) exploring modern communication in Chattering Lover, Aphasic Responder.

And on April 2, Sudeshna Dey will take the virtual stage alongside artists from Lima, Chongqing, and New York City.

Sudeshna’s Spotlight

While details of Sudeshna’s piece are still under wraps, her presence alone speaks volumes. Known for her thoughtful choreography and deep cultural roots, she brings a unique voice to the conversation around dance and social change.

“I’m honored to be part of a series that values not just technique, but message,” she shared with us recently. “It’s about what the movement means—not just how it looks.”

Her work often bridges tradition and experimentation, echoing the very ethos of VSPS.

How to Join the Movement

Tickets are available on Eventbrite, with donation-based pricing that makes the event accessible to all. Suggested tiers range from $10 to $100, and those facing financial hardship can request free access.
