A Musical Evening Honoring a Legend – Ranjan Prasad
A Musical Evening Honoring a Legend: “Life is a Ballad” Celebrates Ranjan Prasad
As the sun dipped low on a sultry mid-April evening, the golden rays stretched long shadows across South Kolkata. From within the charming Wisdom Tree Café, the sound of a guitar’s gentle strumming mixed with familiar melodies floated through the air, drawing listeners closer.
On April 19, a remarkable tribute was held in honor of legendary Bengali composer Ranjan Prasad, celebrating the extraordinary musical journey of his life. The centerpiece of the evening was the screening of a 65-minute English documentary titled “Life is a Ballad”, directed by Abhishek Ganguli, founder of Cinema For A Cause. Ganguli also hosted the event, skillfully guiding the audience through the life and legacy of this beloved maestro.
The documentary unveiled many lesser-known facets of Ranjan Prasad’s life—stories that inspired him to blend Western melodies with Bengali lyrics in a unique, soul-stirring style. To the surprise of many, it was revealed that Ranjan Prasad was not only a gifted musician but also a renowned professional architect, with his creations etched across the city. In his own words, he shared how he found rhythm and harmony not just in music, but even within architectural structures.
The audience was treated to anecdotes about his interactions with many celebrated intellectuals and artists who were influenced by or collaborated with him. Ranjan Prasad has, over decades, mesmerized generations with his musical brilliance. Even today, he continues to captivate listeners with his voice and guitar, evoking nostalgia and admiration alike.
His songs were once the heartbeat of college campuses—and remarkably, they still resonate among students today. In a heartfelt moment, Ranjan Prasad expressed his wish to pass on the legacy of his music to the younger generation, leaving them with a priceless piece of advice: “Never forget your roots.”
As part of the celebration, several key contributors to the documentary and event were honored with posters personally signed by Ranjan Prasad. Those felicitated included:
- Sonali Sarkar and Saumya Dasgupta from Wisdom Tree Café
- Soumyajit Mahapatra from I Communications for press management
- Nandita Sengupta for relationship and public relations management
- Arundhati Chaudhuri for research and scripting
- Shantanu Barman for documentary editing
- Film crew members Soumya, Santu, and Bapi

The evening concluded on a high note with soul-stirring performances by Ranjan Prasad, his talented daughter Priyadarshika, and members of the iconic band Gangchil.
