Film Review – Fatol – The Crack

On April 23, the short film Cracks—based on a story and screenplay by Moumita Ghosh—was screened at Wisdom Café. The film was directed by Abhishek Ganguli, founder of Cinema For A Cause. Moumita’s organization, Meyera, took on the role of producer for this heartfelt cinematic venture.

The evening began with a brief felicitation ceremony honoring those involved in the film’s production, followed by a thought-provoking discussion session on the complex chemistry of human relationships. The event was seamlessly hosted by Upasana Sarkar.

One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the universal truth that love feels equally joyful, regardless of the nature of a relationship. Likewise, heartbreak, no matter the context or cause, carries the same weight of pain—unaffected by age or gender.

Among the notable speakers were Trishna Basak, Paramita Munsi, Sanjay Mishra, director Abhishek Ganguli, and the writer herself, Moumita Ghosh.

Finally, the much-anticipated screening of the film took place. Cracks tells the story of Suranjana and Debashree—seemingly a happy same-sex couple—whose relationship begins to unravel. At the core of the film is the message of how ego, possessiveness, and an urge for control can corrode even the deepest of bonds. Ironically, both women had come together after enduring immense personal traumas.

Shot in black and white, the film uses evocative flashbacks to narrate the backstories: Suranjana, a survivor of domestic abuse, meets Debashree at a café—herself a victim of family neglect. As they seek solace in one another and begin a new life together, the emotional cracks slowly begin to form. Pride, insecurity, and mistrust poison their emotional chemistry, and harmless chatter among friends turns into bitter arguments.

Suranjana comes to realize that it’s time to make a tough decision. But what will it be? Who will come out stronger? Will their attempts to save the relationship succeed, or will the cracks widen into an irreparable break? To find out, one must watch this nuanced and cleanly-crafted short film, Cracks.

For cinema enthusiasts who value strong technical finesse, Cracks offers a fulfilling watch. With a tight script, realistic performances free of melodrama, dynamic camera angles, and effective sound design, the film delivers an immersive experience.

Although the cast predominantly features female characters, the minority male roles left an impression—Bikash Bose as Debashree’s father and Abhijit Palchoudhuri as the uncle both offered compelling performances.

Even in brief appearances, Sunanda Das Chakraborty as the mother and Rajshree Lahiri as the aunt drew attention.

In the lead roles, Moumita Ghosh as Suranjana and Priyanka Kar as Debashree were exceptional. Child versions of the protagonists were played remarkably by Akanksha Acharya and Sharanya Ray. The friend circle was portrayed by Aparajita Mukherjee, Samriddhi, Tina Sarkar, Sulagna, Moumita Bera, Yojana Das Adhikari, and Supti Sarkar.

Most of the female characters were members of Moumita Ghosh’s organization, Meyera. United by their passion to fulfill long-held creative dreams, these women ventured into cinema under the Meyera banner. Cracks stands as a successful and moving representation of that endeavor.
