Maidservant – Short Film Review
The 21-minute short film could have been a typical middle-class story about a middle-aged couple, but the presence of a perpetually suspicious wife, a simple and jovial husband, and a lively young maid, Padma, adds a unique charm. The couple is highly dependent on Padma, who cheerfully completes her daily chores. However, she dislikes being called a “maid” and prefers the term “maidservant.”
The story progresses with humor, highlighting the daily conversations of the couple, particularly the wife’s constant suspicion of her husband’s imagined infidelity. Mamata, the suspicious wife, constantly nags her innocent and good-natured husband with harsh words. Padma, noticing the husband’s helplessness, tries to keep him cheerful. It becomes evident that a pure, innocent bond of friendship has formed between Padma and the husband.
Life goes on this way until Mamata’s suspicious nature creates a disruption. She accuses Padma of having an inappropriate relationship with her husband and scolds her harshly. Humiliated, Padma stops coming to work, leaving the couple struggling with their daily life. They feel her absence at every step.

One day, through a chance discovery on their phone, they learn about an extraordinary achievement of Padma. Overwhelmed, the couple requests Padma to return. What did Padma do? Will she forgive the insult and come back? To find out, watch this heartwarming short film presented by Cinema for a Cause and produced by Learning System.
In many urban households, domestic helpers become an integral part of families while assisting with daily chores. However, these workers are often subjected to mistreatment and abuse. Through Maidservant, director Abhishek Ganguli highlights the need for a change in societal attitudes towards these individuals. With subtle humor, he reminds viewers of the social responsibility we owe to these underprivileged people who leave their homes to work in unfamiliar households.
