Maryada Purushottam: A Dance Drama Bringing the Epic Alive on Stage
To witness the rehearsal of the dance drama Maryada Purushottam, presented by Kasba Surer Kheya, Lifeplus Magazine was present at a community hall in Bijoygarh. From the very first moment, our correspondent was captivated. Without makeup or formal costumes, the performers brought each character to life through sheer bodily expression and rhythmic movement. It was already clear that the final performance would reach great heights.

Our correspondent’s intuition proved right. On May 27, it truly felt as if Lord Rama himself had descended upon Kolkata’s Gyan Manch. With every beat of the dance, fragments of the epic seemed to come alive before the audience.

The spectators were spellbound under the masterful choreography of renowned Odissi dancer Chandra Ghosh and acclaimed Kathak dancer Souvik Chakraborty. Each performer’s brilliance was enhanced by the interplay of light and shadow. Notably, the production was presented as a fusion of two distinct traditions—Odissi and Kathak.

The public relations for Maryada Purushottam were managed by eminent dancer Sumitra Dey, herself a distinguished Odissi artist. Film documentation and social media promotion were handled by Cinema for a Cause.

Every scene of this dance drama seemed to ignite a new light in the minds of the audience. As the epic characters came alive on stage, viewers experienced not only art but also a unique blend of devotion and humanity. The dedication and discipline of the performers were evident in every step.

The audience’s enthusiasm at the end of the evening proved that this presentation will remain etched in memory for a long time. Many remarked that it had been years since they had enjoyed such an artistic night. Truly, Maryada Purushottam was not just a dance drama, but a cultural experience that left a lasting impression on the hearts of Kolkata’s art lovers.
