Interview with Sudeshna Dey
LifePlus Magazine: Sudeshna, how would you like to introduce yourself to the readers of Lifeplus Magazine?
Sudeshna: My name is Sudeshna Dey, and I am a dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher. I am trained in the Uday Shankar style and was a former member of the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company.
LifePlus Magazine: When did your passion for dance begin, and what inspired it?
Sudeshna: When I was in third grade, I performed in a group dance during a festival in my housing complex. Seeing my performance, the members of the housing society requested my father to enroll me in dance classes. Soon after, my father admitted me to the Tanusree Shankar Dance Academy, and that’s where my love for dance began.
LifePlus Magazine: You initially started dance as a hobby, but now it’s your career. Did you ever consider pursuing a different profession?

Sudeshna: Dance is a medium through which I can forget all my worries and pain. That’s what made me fall in love with it. Over time, I realized that nothing else gave me the peace and joy that dance did. Whenever I hear a song, a concept instantly comes to mind. The passion I have for dance, the effort I put into it, and the energy I feel while teaching dance—even when facing physical challenges—make me realize that dance is my life force. That’s why I chose to stay in the world of dance.
LifePlus Magazine: When did you start teaching dance?
Sudeshna: When I was in fourth grade.
LifePlus Magazine: Who was your first dance guru?
Sudeshna: Smt. Tanusree Shankar.
LifePlus Magazine: Tell us a little about your family.
Sudeshna: My father was the librarian at Presidency College, and my mother was a head nurse at a medical hospital. My sister is a professor at Allahabad University. My father was my biggest inspiration—he encouraged me to pursue dance, took me to performances, and guided me on where to train.
After my father’s passing, my husband stepped into his role. Though he works in the IT sector, he is actually a writer. He has always supported my performances—recording my shows, carrying music tracks on his phone, and standing by my side like a strong pillar. Whenever I feel discouraged or exhausted, he motivates me to continue. It is because of him that I want to achieve great heights in dance.
LifePlus Magazine: What honors and achievements have you received in the field of dance?
Sudeshna:
- I won the Telegraph School Excellence Award as an outstanding dancer.
- I received the Uday Shankar Award, which included a scholarship to study dance at The Place, London. This led me to visit the UK in 2005.
- I choreographed the dance drama “Tasher Desh” for Arts Bengal (a Bengali doctors’ association) and performed in Birmingham, UK.
- I won two talent hunt competitions.
- I was invited twice by EZCC (Ministry of Culture, Government of India) to participate in dance and music festivals.
- My dance performance on gender and sexuality themes was selected by Kolkata Centre for Creativity and British Council-supported webinar series in 2021.
LifePlus Magazine: Which performance has given you the most satisfaction as a dancer?
Sudeshna: I love all my performances, but my dance piece “Brihannala” has been one of my best. It received 900,000 views on Facebook!
LifePlus Magazine: We hear you are a busy and successful dance instructor!
Sudeshna: Yes! I am currently working as a Dance Consultant at the New Town School of Performing Arts.
LifePlus Magazine: Dance is undoubtedly your first love, but what else do you do apart from dance?
Sudeshna:
- My directorial debut short film “Spirit” won Best Experimental Short Film at the 8th Short International Film Festival.
- I have acted in several music videos and TV serials.
- I have won two awards in writing competitions, and my articles are published on People’s Reflection website.
- In August 2023, my article was published in Srot Magazine.
- I performed in a dance event organized by Pickle Factory and Artswood on the “Leap” theme, where artists from CieLaroque (a dance company from Austria) also performed.
LifePlus Magazine: You are a culturally active person with deep involvement in the arts. What are your future plans?
Sudeshna:
- I want to open a dance institute and promote the Uday Shankar dance style in India and abroad.
- It’s unfortunate that this dance form is not as famous as Indian classical or traditional dance forms despite being equally Indian.
- I want to reach a level where the next generation is inspired to learn and love the Uday Shankar dance style.
