VG Dheena: A Southern Spark in Independent Filmmaking

In the vibrant and evolving world of Indian cinema, new voices continue to emerge—voices that echo with passion, originality, and purpose. One such voice is VG Dheena, an independent filmmaker from South India whose cinematic journey is as heartfelt as the stories he aims to tell.

A Humble Beginning

VG Dheena’s journey into filmmaking began in 2016. With limited resources but abundant passion, he ventured into storytelling through a unique lens. His very first short film, Thigil, a horror genre piece shot entirely on a mobile phone, reflected his fearless spirit and his ability to innovate under constraints.

Drawn to Emotion and Drama

While Thigil showcased his willingness to experiment, VG Dheena’s heart truly lies in dramatic and emotional narratives. “I enjoy working on art form movies,” he says. “Stories that are dramatic, emotional—those are the ones that speak to me the most.” His connection to storytelling is deeply personal. “I love writing stories and making movies—it gives me joy,” he adds.

Making His Mark

As an independent filmmaker, achievements are often hard-won. VG Dheena’s perseverance bore fruit when his short film won the 2025 Thalaivi Award, a moment he cherishes deeply. But for Dheena, this is only the beginning. “My goal is to make my first Tamil feature film win an Oscar,” he says with quiet determination.

Expanding Horizons

Dheena’s latest endeavor sees him stepping into the role of assistant director on a feature film that is expected to release soon. It’s a significant milestone in his career and a step closer to his larger aspirations.

A Word of Thanks

Speaking of his association with Cinema for a Cause and Lifeplus Magazine, Dheena expresses heartfelt gratitude. “I like your team’s work—you recognize talented people,” he says, appreciating platforms that highlight emerging creators.

Message to Aspiring Filmmakers

Dheena leaves a powerful message for those starting their own journey:

“Don’t skip your thoughts and goals. Between birth and death, you have a chance to create your identity.”
