The Journey of Film Director Sourav Saha

Sourav Saha, a passionate filmmaker from Kolkata and an emerging voice in the Bengali Tollywood film industry, has recently submitted his powerful short film Red Parrot to the Frames For Change – Film Festival, an initiative by Cinema for a Cause in collaboration with Lifeplus Magazine. The film, conceptualized and written by Om Sutradhar—who also produced it—explores a socially relevant yet often overlooked issue. Under Sourav’s direction, the project has become a thought-provoking cinematic experience, one that he describes as deeply fulfilling.

Sourav’s storytelling journey began over seven years ago, rooted in a childhood immersed in theatre. He performed in numerous stage productions and was once selected for a Bengali TV serial, a role he had to decline in order to focus on his higher secondary exams. After completing his education, he returned to auditions but faced a string of rejections.

Determined to understand the industry from within, he began accepting small roles. During his very first assignment, his performance caught the eye of the director, leading to more significant roles. That turning point shifted the trajectory of his acting career.

However, one question kept resonating with him:
Why does everyone follow the director’s vision so religiously?
What makes the director the central force in any production?

Driven by these questions, Sourav began observing directors on set—sometimes even on days he wasn’t shooting. His curiosity soon turned into a calling, leading him to pursue specialization in filmmaking and screenwriting at the prestigious Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute.

During his studies, he temporarily stepped away from acting and served as an Observer Assistant Director, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Post-graduation, he continued working in the industry as an Assistant Director on Bengali television serials and feature films.

Eventually, Sourav took a bold step—he self-financed his directorial debut film intended for the festival circuit. Although the project is currently delayed in post-production due to financial hurdles, his resolve to see it completed and released remains unshaken.

Lal Tiya (Red Parrot), his latest completed work, is now available for viewing. Lifeplus Magazine invites its readers to watch, reflect, and share their thoughts on this remarkable short film.
